Every single year (including when we were at uni), we've seen students spend 90% of their time focusing on mastering their investment banking technical concepts and behavioral interview questions. We've all done it, and it makes plenty of sense on paper. But think about this: if everyone is perfecting their answers to the same technical interview questions, how does that allow you to stand out when you're the 110th person to walk into the same interview room and regurgitate the same answer?

These interview topics and concepts have become a baseline. You're almost expected to answer these questions correctly. That proves that you're just as prepared as other candidates. Therefore, what it doesn't do is make you stand out.

A shared experience across all of the bankers we've spoken to is that they were able to connect with their interviewers. During that 30 min interview slot, 28 of those are just to check you've done your research. But the first 2 mins, or arguably even the first 30 seconds, are the MOST IMPORTANT. A Spring Week is like a short "internship" at a bank. Most tend to be roughly one-week long and provide a chance to be given valuable insights regarding the bank, and network with people in the industry.

The initial, more "obvious" answer is strong Excel, PowerPoint, modeling (don't stress, you'll learn this on the job from 0 to mastery), and communication skills.

And it's far more important than you might initially think. If you're creating slides, or building a model, your work goes through layers and layers of review before it ever reaches the client or your Managing Director. So, how can they observe your contributions first-hand? It's almost always via the emails you're sending out. Every email demonstrates your professionalism, your ability to make judgement calls, and your skill in building a relationship. In fact, this skill becomes more and more important as you rise up the ladder.
